"It's not the strongest species that survives, nor the smartest that survives. It is the most adaptable to change". – Charles Darwin
Adaptability to change inherently involves our capacity for creativity. This course emphasizes that adaptation is one of our most creative abilities. Creativity is not merely a tool for adapting to change; rather, human adaptation itself is a fundamentally creative process.
Course Overview
Adaptation is a crucial skill for navigating life’s challenges. For therapists, understanding adaptation as a creative process is essential in supporting clients through transitions such as adjusting to a new country, coping with the stress of war, or managing significant life changes. This course will provide insights into recognizing these adaptive processes in treatment.
This 3-part course will explore a framework that establishes adaptation as a creative capacity essential for both individual and community survival beyond the physical realm. It will delve into the dual nature of adaptation, highlighting the human ability to transfer elements from one area of experience and apply them effectively in another.
Each module will consist of the following:
- An Interactive Presentation: This segment features a detailed PowerPoint presentation designed to visually enhance understanding and engagement with the course material.
- Experiential Art Therapy: A segment of the session will involve interactive art therapy exercises designed to apply theoretical concepts in a tangible, therapeutic manner. SUPPLIES: Participants will need plain white paper, markers or colored pencils (no prior art experience needed).
- Case Study Discussion: In this part of the session, participants will engage in discussions around case studies, aimed at bridging theory and practice through collective analysis.
PART ONE – What is adaptation? What is creativity? What is creative adaptation?
PART TWO – Metaphor, the language of creative thinking.
PART THREE - Putting creative adaptation into practice.
The course offers a new paradigm for adaptation, integrating it with creativity. After completing this 3-part course, participants will have gained an additional tool to help their clients with the adaptation process using art and music therapy techniques. A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who attend all the live sessions. The course will also be recorded and made available to registrants who are unable to attend in real-time.
