ABOUT

Dr. Howard Chusid is a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) recognized by National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), a national board of certified mental health counselors. He also holds an Ed.D in Counseling Psychology and another certification in Human Resources from Kaplan University.  He sees a variety of clients, from school-aged children to elderly adults, and treats depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, childhood frustrations with school and parental frustrations with kids. He focuses on PTSD in veterans who are graduates of Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and other war torn areas. Trauma victims from many cause also benefit from using Reset Therapy.

I have been doing professional counseling since 2008 when I was completing my doctorate in counseling psychology; I decided to go back to school at 53 and received my doctorate in 2009. Prior to counseling, I was a Radiologic Technologist and taught Radiologic Technology at one of the local community colleges. I also was involved in directing physician practices. At its peak, I had over 17 internal and family practices in the state of Florida. Dealing with managed healthcare enabled me to become an expert in managed healthcare (HMOs), and I started my own in the early 1990s. I was the CEO of a 40,000-member HMO, with over 350 employees, when I was made an offer that I could not refuse. Throughout my career, many people sought me out for career guidance and when the opportunity presented itself, I decided to return to school, which brought me to where I am today.

What should someone know about working with you?

I specialize in career counseling, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, general anxiety, depression, and panic disorder. I usually use CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Reset Therapy, a new method of therapy for PTSD. I am a Master Addiction Counselor and certified by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. I am Florida Supreme Court-certified in Family and Circuit Civil Mediation. In Family Mediation, I assist people in divorcing using mediation. I am certified in Collaborative Divorce as well, which uses a similar method but with attorneys and financial experts. I am one of the few professionals who are certified in Reset Therapy, which uses sound in order to treat PTSD. Reset Therapy is an alternative to EMDR, and it works well in many people plagued by PTSD.

TREATMENT APPROACH

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on how one's thoughts, feelings and behaviors are connected and can be changed. It is based on the idea that how we think (cognition) and how we feel (emotion) can influence how we behave. CBT helps people identify and challenge distorted thinking and replace it with more balanced thinking, leading to improved mood and behavior. ‘Homework’, usually containing practical writing exercises, is often completed by the client between sessions to reinforce the therapy. Examples of tools that practitioners often use are journaling, challenging beliefs, and mindfulness.

Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian Therapy)Person-centered therapy, or Rogerian therapy, was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940’s. It is a form of talk therapy that emphasizes the importance of providing psychological safety, unconditional positive regard, and empathic understanding to clients. This type of therapy is based on the belief that individuals have an innate capacity for self-actualization and self-understanding and that the therapist's role is to provide a supportive environment in which this process can take place. Through the use of active listening, open-ended questions, and non-judgmental reflection, the therapist helps the client to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and accepting environment. By doing so, clients are able to gain insight into their issues, develop a greater understanding of themselves, and work towards personal growth.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)Solution-focused therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on what is going right in a person’s life, as opposed to what is going wrong. It is based on the premise that when a person can identify what is working, they can build on it and make positive changes to the areas of their life that need improvement. A therapist using this approach will often ask questions designed to bring out a person’s strengths and resources, rather than focusing on problems or past issues. The aim of this type of therapy is to help people find solutions to their current problems, in order to build a better future. A solution-focused therapist encourages those in treatment to develop a vision of the future and offers support and guidance as they determine the skills, resources, and abilities needed to achieve that vision successfully.
