Does it really work?

I've tried everything for my depression - talk therapy, STG, meds. Nothing seems to work. Psychedelics seem to be the final option but I'm scared.  It seems like a huge dark unknwn hole, I just don't know what's been studied, what type of psychedelics should I be exploring? What's legal, what does the process entail? If you have articles or can send me in some direction so I can figure out if this is something I should be trying... I'm just so confused and really feeling hopeless.

Dear Unsure, Thank you for your courageous question. After trying so many treatments, it makes sense to feel unsure and scared about trying another treatment, especially one as unfamiliar and mysterious as psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). The good news is that it really can be a transformative treatment, especially people whose depression hasn't responded to more traditional approaches. There is a substantial body of research showing that when done safely and with proper support, PAT can help people reconnect with their own innate healing capacity, allowing both the brain and body to loosen the grip of old patterns that have kept them feeling stuck. That said, it's very important to distinguish between Psychedelic -ASSISTED Therapy in a professional setting vs recreational use. What matters no less than the medicine itself is the quality of therapeutic preparation beforehand and the quality of therapeutic integration afterwards to help you translate your meaningful journey into daily life on the ground. A word of caution is that While PAT has tremendous benefit potential, it's not for everyone at all times, which is why professional screening and guidance is really important to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness. Likewise, PAT is not a shortcut and it's not a magic button that will solve all the problems. Psychedelics open the door and show you the way, but you're the only one who can follow through. Regarding specific medicines, every psychedelic has a different "personality." The right medicine depends on your history, your symptoms, and your medical profile. Currently, the only psychedelic that is legal in Israel is Ketamine, although there is a lot of advocacy to legalize psilocybin (mushrooms) and MDMA in the near future. Ketamine treatment is accessible through designated clinics and involves medical oversight as well as the therapy component. Other psychedelics can be legally accessed through clinical trials or in various other countries. As for resources, a really good book to start with is "How to Change Your Mind" by Michael Pollan. Also check out John's Hopkins Center for Consciousness Studies and MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) for research. Whatever you decide, I hope you don't take your past disappointments as a sign that you've run out of options. Wishing you clarity and healing as you continue your path of exploration!
