Partnering With the Parents of Your Adolescent Clients: The art of being the humblest person in the room

Liza Kramer, MSc

Date: June 20, 2023
Time: 19:00-21:00 IST
Location: Online

As mental health professionals, we strive to remain empathic and non-judgmental towards our adolescent clients. However, as we listen to their struggles, we may become acutely aware of the challenges, shortcomings, or pathologies of their parents. This workshop offers valuable insights and strategies for partnering with parents when working with adolescent clients.

We will explore effective approaches for engaging with parents, including how to navigate the challenges and frustrations of parenting during the teen years. Additionally, this workshop will provide practical tools and techniques for collaborating with parents to support their adolescent's mental health and well-being.

More importantly, we will delve into our greatest responsibility as clinicians of teens: facilitating the creation or rebuilding of a stronger bond between our adolescent clients and their parents - a relationship that teens crave and need, while humbly holding the space as a transient figure in their lives.

In addition, the workshop will challenge clinicians to lean into the very human struggle of navigating teens and how we can truly empathize with their parents. We will also create a space to discuss our own challenges as clinicians who are also parents of teens and how to navigate our professional life when our own children are struggling.
