Rachel Bachner-Melman PhD, FAED

Clinical Psychologist

Originally from Australia, I have lived in Israel for over 30 years and studied Clinical Psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem after a first career as a translator. I speak English and Hebrew and see a wide range of people from those dealing with serious mental illnesses to those experiencing life crises and changes, through to those simply wanting to live fuller and more rewarding lives. Although my training was psychodynamic, I use a variety of therapeutic approaches according to what works best for a particular person and their specific issues. I feel it is a privilege to be able to work with people on the things they feel are most significant in their lives.

My particular clinical and research field of expertise is eating disorders, about which I care very deeply. I have treated these and related disorders in a range of outpatient and inpatient settings in Israel, including Lily Safra Children’s Hospital at the Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, and Hadassah University Medical Center, where I headed the eating disorders unit in the Adult Psychiatry ward from 2010-2012. In 2015 I founded “Koli, the Jerusalem Center for Recovery from Eating Disorders” that provides multidisciplinary individual and group therapy. I am a member of the prestigious Eating Disorders Research Society, an active member of the Academy for Eating Disorders of which I am a Fellow, and President Elect of the Israel Association for Eating Disorders.

I also work in academic settings, as a Senior Lecturer at Ruppin Academic Center and a Teaching Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (MA clinical psychology programs). I have published over 60 articles and book chapters, and speak regularly at conferences in Israel and abroad. In my experience, research and clinical practice feed and enrich one another.
